The Topalian name is highly respected in the design trade as a source of fine antique and semi-antique oriental rugs and carpets. Founded by Malcolm F. Topalian in 1933 and expanded by him over more than five decades, the business focuses exclusively on one- of-a-kind decorative and collectible pieces. Malcolm’s discerning eye and third- generation position in the field enabled him to amass one of the largest and most wide- ranging collections in the New York market. His son Mark joined the business in 1982. Mark graduated from Boston University with a business administration degree and attended the New York School of Interior Design. This background has enabled him take over the leadership of the firm and to keep abreast of the changing design trends and aesthetics of the market. Since 1994, Mark has also been a consultant and appraiser for Doyle New York, a leading auction house, specializing in estate, donation, IRS charitable contribution, and fair market value appraisals. Through this affiliation, he has appeared as an appraiser on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow. He is a member of the Appraisers Association of America, and has worked with leading insurance companies in damage and replacement value appraisals. A primary goal of M. Topalian, Inc., is to make the process of purchasing an oriental rug or carpet a pleasurable experience.
