This charming painting depicts a private dining salon with a small table set with champagne and fruit. Standing on opposite sides of the table, yet leaning across it to kiss each other, are a man dressed in the white satin costume of Pierrot, and a woman dressed in a pale pink silk dress embroidered with silver flowers and coquilles. Born in Nantes on September 21, 1829, Auguste Toulmouche studied with Marc Charles Gabriel Gleyre. He exhibited at the Paris Salon beginning in 1848; in 1852 he won a third class medal; in 1861 a second class medal; and in 1878 (Exposition Universelle) an additional third class medal. In 1870, Toulmouche was made a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur. |
