| November Morning | |
| Expertise: | |
| As a chronicler of New England, Willard Metcalf painted seasonal landscapes in a variety of locales, including popular artist-haunts such as Old Lyme, Connecticut, Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Cornish, New Hampshire. He also applied his brush to the landscape of central Vermont, working in and around Chester, on the Little Williams River, as well as in Springfield. Painted a year before his death, November Morning exemplifies Metcalf’s late aesthetic approach, revealing his penchant for strongly composed designs and expansive panoramas as well as his continuing reliance on impressionist strategies to document the seasons and capture the spirit of place. Little wonder that--more than any other American Impressionist-- Metcalf was considered the most skilled in translating New England scenery into paint. It is also not surprising that his late views of Vermont--of which November Morning is a fine example--have continued to inspire many contemporary landscape painters working in the area, among them Neil Drevitson, Richard Whitney and Sid Willis. |
